Student Leadership at Ercall Wood Academy
Student Voice refers to the expression of values, opinions, beliefs and perspectives of the student body. At Ercall Wood Academy, we utilise our Student Leadership to give students a voice at school.
At EWA, we believe that our Student Leadership Team is the best way of empowering our students. It gives our students a sense of ownership over their education, as well as giving them a channel to share their opinions and ideas. Most importantly, it creates an opportunity for staff and students to work together, to build a community that we can all be proud of.
What is good Student Leadership?
- Student Leaders must embody our core values of empower, respect and aspire
- Student Leadership must make a positive contribution to our school
- Student Leadership must never contradict positive pupil behaviour
- Student Leadership must value and respect all members of the school community
- Student Leadership must work to promote equality and diversity, whilst also tackling discrimination and prejudice
- It must give ALL students a voice
Each year group has a Head Boy & Deputy Head Boy and a Head Girl & Deputy Head Girl. This gives us a range of perspectives from each year group, making up a Student Leadership Team of 20 students. These students can be identified by their badges, and the Year 11 Student Leaders can also be identified as they wear white shirts, as opposed to our normal blue ones. The Student Leadership Team meet every Week B with Mr Furlong to discuss ideas and initiatives, and they meet once every half term with Mr Murphy for a ‘Breakfast with the Head’.
We also have a range of Year 11 Prefects who are mentored by different staff around the school, working on different areas. These include Sports, Performing Arts, Charity and Fundraising, Enrichment, Careers, Art, Media and Environmental Prefects. Year 11 Prefects can be identified by their silver and green ties.
How do I apply to be part of the Student Leadership Team?
The application for the Student Leadership roles will take place in the Summer term. Students will write a letter of interest that needs to be handed to Mr Furlong, this will then be reviewed by Mr Furlong and the Pastoral Year Lead from the relevant year group. Candidates will then be shortlisted, and Mr Murphy will make the final selection. In addition to this, the Year 11 candidates will also go through an interview process. Keep an eye out during form time and in assemblies for more information on this.
