The aim of the Religious Education Department is to provide enriching lessons that effectively prepare our students at Ercall Wood Academy for a meaningful life in our culturally rich community. Britain is now a very diverse society; finding out about the beliefs and lifestyles of all people makes us think about what we believe and reflect on our own choices. We wish to encourage interest in different beliefs and practices, promoting mutual respect, tolerance and understanding, creating an awareness of shared ambitions and goals. Throughout students will be encouraged to develop and express their own ideas and opinions, sharing but also listening to the views of others. These are important life skills which staff within our department have a passion for. In valuing the contributions of individuals, we wish to encourage and celebrate a feeling of self-worth and confidence. In the words of J.M. Barrie, βThe moment you doubt you can fly, you cease forever to be able to do it.β We wish all our students to fly!
Throughout their learning, Ercall Wood Academy students will be encouraged to engage with challenging questions about the ultimate meaning of life, beliefs about God, the nature of reality and morality through developing knowledge and understanding of Christianity, other principal world religions, religious traditions and worldviews. Students will develop their sense of identity and belonging, in order to flourish within communities, as responsible citizens in society and global communities. Through our work students will develop respect for others and their beliefs, challenge prejudice through encouraging empathy, generosity and compassion. We believe Religious Education makes a distinctive contribution in helping students understand the significance of belief and its contribution to their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
