Life Skills at Ercall Wood Academy is concerned with developing pupils’ qualities and attitudes, knowledge and understanding, together with the abilities and skills, in relation to themselves and others, to lead to social responsibilities and morality. It helps pupils to be considerate and enterprising in the present whilst preparing them for an informed and active involvement in family, social, economic and civic life. At Key stage 3, students build on the knowledge and understanding, skills, attributes and values they have acquired and developed during the primary phase. PSHE education acknowledges and addresses the changes that young people experience, beginning with transition to secondary school, the challenges of adolescence and their increasing independence. It teaches the knowledge and skills which will equip them for the opportunities and challenges of life. Students learn to manage diverse relationships, their online lives, and the increasing influence of peers and the media. At Key stage 4, students deepen knowledge and understanding, extend and rehearse skills, and further explore attitudes, values and attributes acquired during Key stage 3. PSHE education reflects the fact that students are moving towards an independent role in adult life, taking on greater responsibility for themselves and others. Students will also cover numerous topics in Citizenship throughout the Life Skills course. At Ercall Wood Academy Citizenship Education helps to provide pupils with knowledge, skills and understanding to prepare them to play a full and active part in society. Throughout our Life Skills lessons we aim to foster pupils’ keen awareness and understanding of democracy, government and how laws are made and upheld. We would like to equip pupils with the skills and knowledge to explore political and social issues critically, to weigh evidence, debate and make reasoned arguments. It is one of our goal to prepare pupils to take their place in society as responsible citizens, manage their money well and make sound financial decisions. Careers Education is another important part of Life Skills at Ercall Wood Academy. During Life Skills lessons students will have access to learning about various career options and pathways to achieve their goals. The new Careers Hub will support students in investigating college applications, jobs and apprenticeships. Ercall Wood Academy has a comprehensive careers curriculum in line to meet all eight Gatsby benchmark criteria.
